Stay tuned for the new BC MTB Social Training ride. The 6am morning BC ride has developed into a hugely popular morning training session, but we have had many requests from new and inexperienced MTB riders (like grumpytex) wanting to improve their skills in a similar environment without the pressure to keep up with so called experts.

The ride will start with daylight savings on a night TBA and will be be aimed at all level riders.

Expert tuition will be given and riders will cover a variety of courses close to Launceston.

The Bissell report...

Our long lost made Jamie has finally made contact with the mother ship! Hopefully we will see him again soon! here is his latest race report....

I did however manage to get out and compete in the final big road race of

the season that's held up here. It's called the Carcross Bike Loppet and

is a 173km ride that does a big triangle out in the Yukon Territory. You

can ride the race in a team of up to five, but I opted to do it solo. I

didn't have high hopes for a good finish, as I had already been slacking on

the training, but in the end, the legs played the game and I ended up

fourth. I was pretty rapt. The race brief is as follows. The race was a

mass start with about 40 people jostling for position. The course wound

its way gradually up a valley with a series of short but steep climbs. On

the third climb the leaders hit and I charged to stay with them. By the

time we reached the summit we looked around and there were five of us left.

We would remain a bunch of five for the next 100km and sat on a steady

pace of about 35km. From that point on the course was rolling but

reasonably flat. The biggest obstacle came in the form of a head wind that

hit around the 70km mark. There were also some patches of horrific

bitumen. After 112km, the old seagull popped. I thought my time was up

when I was passed, first by one bloke, and then a sheila who was chasing

him. I managed to get the sheila's wheel and together we caught the other

bloke. We were now a bunch of three and I had resigned myself to finishing

with this second bunch. I was pleasantly wrong. Turns out two blokes out

of the four who had remained on in the lead bunch also popped, so we

managed to catch them and form a new group of five. From there I managed a

last minute break away up the final climb with another bloke (a Kiwi

actually) and he and I finished third and fourth respectively. Of course

the BC kit was on in full pride and I've sent a couple of photos of the

event your way to check out. There was even a shot of the lead bunch

(which was five of us) on the front page of the Yukon Daily Star. So that

was pretty mint.

Bike Central mechanic and travelling wilbury Jamie Bissell has taken out the expert division in this years Skagway Hill Climb in Alaska. In a time of 59.10 Bissell powered up the steep 19km climb to leave his rivals in his wake. Bissell credited his victory to his recent training in Tasmania with his local BC bunch riders!!

"It was a tough ride but my hero Grumpytex taught me race like you are chasing, not being chased" "I was in the big dawg most of the way up the climb, another art handing down by Grumpytex"

The "skippy"peanut butter also helped, further evidence that a little bit of sick BC humour has rubbed off on our old mate. Hurry up and get back old boy!

ORCA BACK IN POLICE CUSTODY....

Brilliant Detective work has seen the ORCA returned to our possession just days after it was stolen from our front window. The thief did $2500 damage to our windows and there was some minor damage to the bike. Can't go into too much detail until the matter is dealt with in court.

Launceston Tri Club BUNCH RIDE

As I sit back and try and put my finger on all the crashes and near misses over the last week/month I feel that I may have come up with a theory.
I reflected about last winter and who was actually riding in the group at the time and I may of accidently touched on a link while I was trying to complete an assignment.
I though winter and linked it to the riders who have gone down quicker than a hooker when the American sailors come in and we may have something. There are exceptions to the rule as with most theories but it is all open to discussion. At this time I have no updates from the Saturday ride. Conny just to let you know there has been two falls since my last report Alex Clements who I have referred to as Alex Dimitiradas and Pete Bif Lanham

Felly ex Queenslander says it all, Midday although out sometimes last year in winter was very inconsistent, and this may have had to do with his choice of socks. Soy Sam came in to the team in spring, Alex just a young buck and Bif has experience on mountain bikes and just stuffed up.
The rumors have started around town and people are saying that the Bike Central group is a bunch of 30-40 something’s who cannot ride, we need to correct this. Tex and spiritual leader Sando took the first steps on Thursday with an inspirational talk and JA has taken Midday and Soy under his chicken wing to give them advice and tips. Bif again you just stuffed up.
In a follow up to the Fine Cotton story from the last report it appears that I was correct and there is actually a near twin for Dale Woolston. The Examiner on Friday is the proof with Dale Woolster in the photo at Bike Central headquarters.

Bike Central Ride Report – Tuesday 16-3-10
Overall an incident free ride with a slight change of route at Legana where we pushed up the incline and back out onto muddy creek. I would like to make passing comment on a particular rider or possible replacement. Was it Dirk or wasn’t it
It reminded me of a very famous scandal that happened on a racecourse in the mid 80’s involving a horse called Fine Cotton. Fine Cotton was a horse of very limited abilities that was racing in the southern areas of Queensland. The horse was eligible to race in restricted races (for horses with fewer than a certain number of wins) and even then had a poor record leading up to the substitution. Fine Cotton's last race, before the ring-in, was in a 1,200m Intermediate Handicap at a Doomben Wednesday meeting on August 8, 1984, where he carried 53.5 kg and started at 20-1. He ran 10th in a field of 12.
The scam involved a syndicate, which was said to be headed by former bloodstock agent John Gillespie, purchasing a horse that looked almost identical to Fine Cotton and performed better. Unfortunately for the syndicate, this horse was injured and unable to race when the ring-in was due to take place. Having already invested money and gone so far, the syndicate decided to find another horse. With time running out, they purchased a horse called Bold Personality, an open-class horse several grades above Fine Cotton.
The syndicate faced a problem in that the horses were different colours. Fine Cotton was an 8 year old brown gelding and had white markings on his hind legs, whereas Bold Personality was a 7 year old bay gelding with no markings. To overcome this issue, they applied Clairol hair colouring to Bold Personality with limited success. On race day, having forgotten the peroxide to whiten the legs of Bold Personality, they resorted to crudely applied white paint. These poorly conceived attempts to overcome the discrepancies in appearance between the two horses later served to highlight the amateurish nature of the scheme.
He certainly at first glance on Saturday night looked like Sam Pratt with a black mane and the sophisticated glasses.
Wednesday 17-3-10
The ride had a very eerie feeling about it this morning as we headed off into a very dense fog which caused condensation to drip off your clothing. It was 15 degrees for crying out loud, I just don’t relate that to foggy mornings.
Now I said the ride yesterday was incident free well today the s—t hit the fan again. Approaching what is commonly known as Riser’s Roundabout there was extreme pace. Dr Fell literally lived up to his name and jammed on the front brake and dropped his bike sliding into the curb. Midday was right on his hammer and was propelled over Dr Fell while doing his best Greg Louganis impression. From where I was it all happened in slow motion and Midday actually went quite close to wrapping himself around a pole. This incident could have made the clips that Wide World of Sports used to have with Ric Disneck.
In my follow up investigations Midday is a bit bruised and okay, but the bike has taken a hammering, might be cheaper to get a brand new Scott Midday. Dr Fell was unavailable for comment as his office door was closed today when I went to interview him.
The lesson from all of this is f__k_n slow down at Risers Roundabout.
In a follow up from my last Wednesday blog, Pete Bif Lanham actually called the driver who gave him a hard time as he knew him and they smoked the piece pipe. Consequently this week he took a wide berth and we were safe along St Leonards Road. Share and share alike.

Congratulations to Bike Central sponsored riders Stuart Ryan and Susan Casey who had some outstanding rsults at the recent NZ Ironman.
Susan blitzed the womens field finishing in a PB of 10.06.12 with a blistering run of 3.33!!!
Stuart completed his first race over the ironman distance and finished ina very respectable 10.58.40
Tasmanian athlete Hayden Armstrong proved that both he and Susan are Tasmania's premier ironman athletes with a very quick time of 9.06.56, finishing 7th in the Pro's! Susan finshed 9th in the Pro women, 2nd Australian home.

Congratulations to all three athletes who showed that Tassie athletes can mix it with the best in the world!

Bike Central Ride Report 04-03-10

Thursday ride once again and it everything may not be as it seems. After receiving correspondence from the Bike Central hierarchy there seems to be a relationship on thin ice as there were numerous emails between Coach and his 2nd best friend Tex and all about one’s character. Stay tuned.

Early in the ride and drama occurred as Sam Soy pulled his foot out of the pedal to go around the roundabout at Charles and Canning ( close to Tont 4 Tont). Either the boy was reliving his mountain bike days or he just lost the plot. What do you think Sammy Slip?

The ride progressed at a solid rate out through Youngtown and this was maintained for the majority of the ride. On investigation there was a small hiccup in the bunch with new member Stephen (Young Matt’s Dad) dropping his water bottle. Steve did not tell any one and proceeded to go back for his bottle and hence was chasing the bunch all the way through Relbia and took the Johnston’s Road route at St Leonards. Steve was in front of the bunch and when we caught him he was the colour of a Grosse Lisse Tomato upon ripening. 1. I mentioned that we were going up Wavenberg next and he advised he was heading home.

As we pushed our way up Wavenburg Spaniard must have been feeling good or there was no threat of rain or wind as he made a move and drove the bunch through the suburbs of Waverley and Ravenswood. Padge just may have been scared though as he may have had a previous lover in the vicinity. JA opened up on the flat and we were chasing hard. Then the coach fired up and sent Ben Avanti Mather to the front to cool the pace and allow us mere mortals to catch up and suck on the CO2 canisters to try and stimulate some oxygen flow.

Alex Dimitriatis and JA were at it for the rest of the way and I’m unable to comment on the sprint as I was too far back to witness the action, but this was a very solid ride.

I must admit going down Glemore Road I had a brain fade and actually forgot how to change gears. Luckily JA grabbed me on the bum and had a fondle and that defiantly got me going again.

1. Stephen actually had a crash on the way home at the intersection of the Metz and Sports Authority. Apparently he went over the handlebars and a possible AC. Rog stop rubbing your hands together. Seriously we hope that you make a full recovery Stephen and are back out on the bike as soon as possible. Apparently there are camera’s at this intersection so he may become an overnight sensation

Bike Central Ride Report 05-03-10

The ride started in balmy conditions with Team Avanti rider Brown trying to steal the lead out from BC. Tex was having none of this and cruised past and issued a warning to all other teams that have joined in our regime.

A good pace was set by all who took the front.

Pete Lanham was feeling like his major sponsor (concrete) when he was up front with Crippsy. Pete was also very critical of the Crippsy’s red beast and calling it a clunker and a training bike at best. “Does he actually ride that thing in competition”

Luke Padgett was seen trying to flag down the bakery van as it went past to see if there was any fruit buns on board. A little sprint at the end with a lot of promise shown by Matt the new BC prodigy.

After a bit of a break away from the pen and bike I'm feeling refreshed to
try and entertain the hierarchy at Bike Central.

Well what an entertaining ride it was today with JA altering the route once
again and it certainly put the wind up a few of the bunch which consisted of
approximately 50 riders from all walks of life.

JA showed vast improvement in his communication skills and just took hold of
the bunch and gave very strong direction, instead of going up we went down
and instead of going slightly up we went a fair way up which bought us back
to the highway at the top of muddy creek for some more uphill. This really
shook the bunch up and there were tears and laughter as we came into Legana
and a few people saying WTF.

The fun started with the usual sprint and normally it is just a organized
race back into town to see who can get to the coffee shop first. JA took off
early and the chase began. Everything was going along fine until Jack Black
and Alex Dimitriadas just hung around the front of the bunch like flies to
poo and caused mass confusion at the front of the bunch which nearly
resulted in a possible fall and the whole bunch would have been scattered
across the West Tamar Highway waiting for a Kenworth to up the road toll.

Being a young fella Jack Sprat I understand your need to want to be up there
and do your best all the time but there are group rules that need to be
abided by and you need to follow these. If you think being told to GTF out
of the way and being told to settle down by the Colonel for not abiding
group rules is harsh you need to really think of the possible consequences
of your actions.

After the slight altercation young Jack Sprat kindly rode me into the ground
and I was dropped at Woolies and needing mouth to mouth to even get me going
again.

Bike Central Ride Report 03-03-10

I would like to make an official welcome back to Matt Sydes. Slugger as he
has been known for a long time picked a great day to make his comeback as we
took on White Hills.

There was a bit of tension in the car park before the ride as the middle
aged guys sat on one side and the young whippersnappers on the other. It was
a bit like a schoolyard. He said that and I did this scenario. Anyway the
ride got away with no incident.

Not much to report on the way out except for Tex, Mike Lanham joining the
ride late and very late like Relbia.

The hill bought a bit of drama as Soy Sam seemed to be mistaken for me as we
had our Team Columbia gear on and was going toe to toe with young Jack
Sprat. The young Jack Sprat blew up and Soy Sam took the pretzels. Are you
allowed to have pretzels Sam?

At Corrralen the group was split with JA, Macca, Dr Fell, Ben Avanti and the
Rat Pack setting a cracker out front. The chasers were lead well by Tex
Turner. Tex did a lot of work but when I tried to help out the big fella
kept coming round and not taking a rest. There was no drop in pace as
claimed at the coffee shop so I thought the boy must be on drugs of a
special kind as it was like following Jan.

Big Jan pulled up short at the chainsaw shop in St Leonards and he claimed
puncture of the tyre. I say I need another injection.

Near accident at the roundabout with Johnny come Lately Mike Lanham not
seeing a car and then using every road safety claim on the way to coffee to
try and get himself out of it. The car was black and he didn't have his
lights on. Mike it was daylight and maybe you are blinded by the light.

BC Ride Report - 17/2/2010

The death of a legend….. maybe not.

This morning’s ride was horrific, unspeakable grief.

A changed route, confusion in the bunch, silence. The story unfolds….

What has been widely known as ‘White Hills Wednesday’ almost died this morning. Self appointed BC Tour Director Jason ‘Glowsticks’ Le Blanc decided that it was time to change the tried, tested and much love Wednesday ride. The only problem was 'Glowsticks' was still buzzing from MSfest, Festivale and the like and he forgot to accurately record the route and let people know where to go.

We continued out along Hobart road along the recognised part of the course but continued south to Evandale via the Breadalbane round-about. A yell of ‘right-turn’ prior to Evandale was met with little response from Strawb and co. at the front, obviously having problems with their race radios!!

This is where the ride ended up being like an Episode of “Speed”. With Keanu Tex and Susan Bullock driving the bus from the rear and the bloke supposedly in control of the run away ‘rock show’ some 400 metres up the road, chaos reigned!!

Slowly the bunch regrouped at Chromey’s with some short bursts on the remaining Hills to Hobart Road before we were all met by Peak hour traffic and red lights.

It was a somewhat sombre mood at the coffee shop, a feeling like we had lost a friend. Some quick decisions were made. Le Blanc has been sacked, Gtex reinstated and WHITE HILLS WEDENSDAY is back!! There were further discussions about changing Thursday’s ride to mimic this morning rock show with a slightly altered conclusion via right turn at Chromey’s, Penquite Rd, Elphin Rd and CBD.

We are open for sensible discussions.

This weeks BC Ride report by CAV

Firstly I must apologise to my fans for the absence of any ride reports this
week. This has been due to a severe case of writerblockitis and I'm working
on strategies to overcome this in order to satisfy my small but growing fan
base.

Monday:

Tex creates his own ride and beats himself into frenzy at outsprinting a
commuter on the West Tamar Highway. There was something about broken
promises in there but there may be some underlying innuendo there.

Tuesday:

This ride is becoming known as the JA and Padge show. It may be just
coincidence but over the last two weeks the JA and Padge show have gone to
1st and 2nd wheel as the ride sets out and then set a blistering pace early.
Your don't have to be Einstein to know what is going on here. Yes you are
correct Padge has been copping it up the poo hole at JA's new love shack!!

Slight diversion from the truth there but the boys are hell bent on grinding
everyone else into ground and when Padge gave me the flick of the elbow I
basically said " If you want to cut my legs off you can -------- stay out
there".

Tex did do some mighty fine work this day in assisting a small group real in
the fast breaking Padgett but you were on a time trial bike.

Wednesday:

The most enjoyable ride of the week and the one that usually brings about
the most misadventure.

The ride started off with Keith and me leading out a group of nomads. There
was no one else to be seen. Then it all started to come together with Pete,
JA, Macca's, Felly and last of all Tex at Five Ways!!!! WTF

The ride headed out to tackle the mountain and a car certainly cut some
people down in flames in their attempts to spring themselves to the front of
the pack. JA was impressive and hit the top first with a host of other
riders in his wake.

Pete, Tone Mac, and I broke away after the hill and were caught by JA at the
bridge. The breakaway was then caught on the approach to St Leonards.

The pace was on through St Leonards with a few attacks and then where it all
really begins at the meatworks with a big push from the likes of Tex, JA and
Orthodontist Scott. The group were clean thru the roundabout and the dash
was on for the line. I will leave you to make your own assumptions here on
who took out the sprint.

Thursday:

Everyone wants to be an acrobat

WTF I said to Dirk after this happened but the disease is catching

Bif tried it in the car park
Tone Mac then attempts a triple somersault with a pike in the middle of
Hobart Road at the top of Youngtown Hill.

Tone Mac was riding next to Bif and after trying to slate Dirk for his pace
at the front falls into the bloke riding next to him in Bif.
Maybe Bif was talking about this death defying act and Tone Mac wanted to up
the ante??

In talking to Dirk this morning he stated that Tone Mac moved 15 feet to his
right to nearly take Bif out and then tried to blame Dirk for this. Dirk
advised that the big fella was looking out for him.

Tex went out early in the sprint to the line but there was a big jump from a
young fella in the Avanti gear who would have been fresh as he never had a
go on front. Not quite sure but I think Tex may of conjured a victory here.

Friday:

Nothing much happens on Fridays, but I was asked by my number one fan to
include his sensational sprint to the line to take first place this morning.
He advised he waited for the lesser beings and then kicked again. Good work
JA

Ride Report - 3-2-10 by Cav

Wednesday bought about its usual adventure but today it shall be dedicated
to Midday and the report is called the Mike Walsh Show.

Tex lead out the small but elite group of riders in his usual style as he
tried to make up for yesterday's performance where he was seen swapping off
with Ken.

Next in line was Soy and Midday and this was where it all went wrong. As we
plunged into Relbia, Midday obtains a puncture. What happened next was just
a calamity of events. Tex helps with the change and sledges Midday about his
tyres and when finished rides off into the sunset leaving the group behind.
Midday then tries to pump it up while having the tyre on the ground sitting
on blackberries. Finally he couldn't get the wheel back on and Jas
Anderschhh had to step in and help out. This procession of events reminds me
of myself mid winter last year.

KOM Jas Anderschhh followed by Sam Soy Pratt.

Sam very good on hills but no go on the flat and really struggling to keep
up as shot out back very early.

With the climbing finished a breakaway begun. Coming into the bridge Tex hit
the lead and Anderschhh, Dr Fell and myself took the opportunity to duck
underneath whilst under brakes and put a gap in the field.

With Anderschhh set a fine tempo and doing the majority of the work we held
the pack off until approaching St Leonards. Constant surging and attacks
began with the main one being up Meatworks Rise. Anderschhhh, Dr Fell, Tex
Turner(dropped out at roundabout), Midday and myself to battle for the sash.

Midday got sucked to the front at the right time and I tried to get into the
slipstream of Anderschhh but you know the result.

Now for the most explosive news of the day which happened back at the coffee
shop. To work out what happened we shall play a little game where you need

Adelaide, Australia, 24th January 2010 - HTC-Columbia's Andre Greipel secured his second overall win of the Santos Tour Down Under on Sunday becoming one of only two riders who have won the event more than once. Greipel won the race on his first attempt in 2008, crashed out in the leaders jersey in 2009 and came back in 2010 to win again, claiming 9 stage wins in Adelaide over the three years.

A quality bunch of riders took of today which bought about much
anticipation. Tex led out with Macca in to a howling Southerly and set the pace for the ride.
The pace must have been on early because the only comment from Suse in the bunch all morning was her reply to my “She’s on this morning” was ‘No fucking kidding!!” followed by some very loud panting noises. (Ed. By Tex)
White Hills must do something to people's ticker as we picked up many along
the way. The last one to be picked up was Felly at Coraleen. He had a good
excuse but by the look of his shorts at the coffee shop he had overcooked
the sausage.
Ben took out KOM followed by Macca and Tex although it could be said that
Macca shortchanged himself and left his run too late. A bit like Skybeau in
the 1990 Melbourne Cup.
What happened next was either good tactics or just plain sly. The last bloke up the hill Dale Dastardly Woolston tacked on to the back of Macca and Ben in the break and rode their coattails into town and didn't take a turn to the chainsaw shop when he seen the group encroaching. Then he wins the sprint!!
There was not enough contribution in the bunch with few to do the work to
make up the gap.

Bif Lanham has joined the Moscow Circus after his acrobatics in the car park at Margaret Street and I've enrolled in a TAFE course taken by Tex Turner called "Screwing Things". The teacher comes with big raps.
